12 HΟURS FOR GREECE
Initiative 12 HOURS FOR GREECE in Brussels supporting NGO ‘The Smile of the Child’
Marathon reading of Homer’s Odyssey by 400 European citizens
Concert by Dionysis Savvopoulos, Lavrentis Machairitsas, Vassilis Kazoulis and Alexandra Gravas
On Wednesday, May 16th 2012, at the Cultural Centre Halles de Shaerbeek in Brussels, hundreds of European citizens will send a message of solidarity to the Greek people, and
raise funds for Greek NGO ‘The Smile of the Child’, through the initiative ’12 hours for Greece’.
From 10 am to 7pm, 400 readers of all ages and backgrounds, will participate in a marathon reading of Homer’s Odyssey, produced by the non-profit organizations The Readers of Homer and EllinikoTheatro.
Representatives of the European Ιnstitutions and the Belgian federal and regional governments, Ambassadors, artists and journalists, are expected to join hundreds of citizens who will read/sing their passages each in their own way and language, one after the other, during 9 hours.
Their common aim is to send a dynamic message of solidarity to Greece from the heart of the EU, promoting the human values represented by Greek Culture. The Odyssey reminds of the brave, intelligent and transcendental nature of humankind in times of trouble, while the participatory reading promulgates the collective effort required to protect Europe’s shared cultural identity.
The reading will be coordinated with on-stage projections of related images and Stanley Lombardo’s translation of the Odyssey in English, and enhanced by melodies on reconstructed ancient Greek instruments by the ensemble Lyravlos.
At 8 pm, the evening will continue with a concert by the celebrated Greek singers Dionysis Savvopoulos, Lavrentis Mahairitsas, Vassilis Kazoulis and internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Alexandra Gravas, with the participation of local musical and dance ensembles.
All day long, the Cultural Centre Halles de Shaerbeek will host exhibitions, film projections, talks and other events related to Greek culture and gastronomy.
Αll artists involved are participating to the event pro bono, while production costs will be covered by local and international sponsors. The inspirers of this initiative, an independent group of European citizens based in Brussels, chose to donate the proceeds of the event to Greek NGO ‘The Smile of the Child’ which provides educational, social and medical support to thousands of children affected by the Greek crisis.
Registrations for the marathon reading are now open through the website:
Participation to the reading is free, while 10€ tickets will be on sale at the door for the evening programme. All participants are encouraged to make a donation, big or small, to support the humanitarian cause of the initiative.
