Pilgrimage to Ancient Athenian Democracy
Europa Nostra and Elliniki Etairia (Hellenic Society for the Preservation of Culture and the Environment) are celebrating Europa Nostra’s 50th Anniversary since its inception.
The culmination of the celebrations will be the 50th Anniversary General Assembly, to be held at the Acropolis Museum on Thursday June 16th, and the Award Giving Ceremony which will take place later that day at the Odeion Herodus Atticus in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Dr. Karolos Papoulias, the European Commissioner of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androula Vasiliou, and Europa Nostra’s President, Placido Domingo.
On the evening of Saturday June 15, Europa Nostra and Elliniki Etairia are organizing a “Pilgrimage to Ancient Athenian Democracy”. Guests will visit the Museum of the Stoa of Attalos and listen to relevant readings from ancient authors in English by Yannis Simonides, and then will walk through the Ancient Agora to the Pnyx where Commissioner Vasiliou, President Domingo and Yannis Simonides will read from Pericles’s Funeral Oration.
In the evening of Thursday 13 June, Yannis Simonides will give a performance of Socrates Now for the honored members and guests of Europa Nostra and Elliniki Etairia at the University Museum, beneath the Acropolis in Plaka.
