Marathon reading of the ILIAD in Brussels

In the context of the closure of the Greek presidency of the EU, EllinikoTheatro is participating in the third and final edition of the 12 HOURS FOR GREECE festival in Brussels. On June 27th and 28th 2014 hundreds of European citizens will send a message of solidarity to Greece from the Cultural Centre Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels. Οn Saturday 28th from 10am to 5pm, 200 readers of all ages and backgrounds will participate in a marathon reading of Homer’s ILIAD, produced by EllinikoTheatro, in collaboration with The Readers of Homer. Representatives of European Union institutions and of the Belgian federal and regional governments, diplomats, artists and journalists are expected to join hundreds of citizens who will read their passages in their own way and language, one after the other, for 7 consecutive hours. Their common aim will be to send a dynamic message of solidarity with Greece from the heart of the EU, calling for courage in the face of crisis through the clarifying force of Homer’s great epic. A monument of Western literature, the Iliad’s searing account of war and the costs of war highlights the fragile bonds of honor and shared responsibility that hold our communities together. Through the shared ritual of participatory reading, the poem’s evocation of what we hold in common – what we must hold in common – will sound loud and clear. The reading will be enhanced by on-stage projections of related images and of a translation of the Iliad  in English. The reading is inspired by the successful presentation of Homer’s Odyssey in 2012 and Plato’s Republic last year by the same producers. The evening will continue with a live concert of Greek singers Dionysis Savopoulos, Lavrentis Machairitsas, Giannis Zouganelis, Panos Mouzourakis followed by a traditional dance show by local groups. All day long, the Cultural Centre Halles de Schaerbeek will host exhibitions, film projections, talks and other events related to Greek culture and gastronomy. The inspirers of this initiative are an independent group of European citizens based in Brussels. Αll artists involved are participating pro bono, while production costs are covered by local and international sponsors.
